Carpet Catastrophes.

Carpet Catastrophes.

That moment is one you wish you could freeze in time and just rewind to a few seconds before. It was just a little movement, just a flick of the wrist but yes, you did just spill a glass of red wine all over your previously pristine carpet.

If you have young children keeping your furniture and in particular your carpet clean can be an absolute nightmare but when you end up being the one making the spills, then there are some tricks and tips you need to do to lessen the damage.

But first, let’s bust a few myths. The one thing you shouldn’t do is to throw white wine on to a red wine stain. For a start it’s a waste of white wine but more importantly it doesn’t achieve anything and does not, as the myth goes, neutralise the stain.

Here’s what you need to do, but you need to get it done quickly:

  1. First of all, you need to blot, not rub, the spill area to absorb any wine that hasn’t yet seeped into the fabric.
  2. Then you have a choice. If you’ve spilt just a little you might be able to add a baking soda paste, made with three parts water to one part baking soda and apply to the area. When it’s dry you can vacuum away the residue and the stain should have disappeared. Admittedly this does rely on having baking soda to hand, but it can be highly effective.
  3. If you have a slightly larger area to clean up try pouring into a bowl, two cups of lukewarm water along with a tablespoon of washing up liquid and a tablespoon of white vinegar. Apply some to the stain with a soft, clean cloth and continue blotting away until the stain fades away.

At this point, if all else fails consider buying in a special wine-removing product to deal with the problem or whether it might time to call in someone like Carpet One Australia to treat yourself to something new underfoot. It might be time to swap out the carpet for a something like wood or vinyl – anything that can be wiped or vacuumed has got to be easier.

You can create a whole new look to your living area with a few well-placed rugs, a new carpet or wooden flooring. To figure out what would suit your style, take a look at some lifestyle blogs and home furnishing sites for fresh inspiration. Wooden flooring can be fairly easy to start as a DIY project, depending on what state your existing boards are in.

With the perils of children, the odd red wine mishap and general wear and tear of life, treating yourself to some new flooring is always worth considering. In the meantime, get working fast on spills and with a little luck and by avoiding the old wives’ tale,s you should be able to restore your carpet to at least its former state, if not something altogether cleaner.
