Create Your Own Self-Care Toolkit.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, self love and self care are vital. Sometimes we just need to take some time out and recharge our batteries. Even if you have a busy lifestyle, you can still make time to look after yourself. The best way to indulge in a little self care is to create a self care toolkit, a collection of your favourite items that help you unwind and relax.

Your self care toolkit can be as big or as small as you need it to be, it is entirely unique to you and your needs.

No two toolkit’s will be the same, however, every toolkit needs some basics. In this post I’d like to share the contents of my self care toolkit with you. My toolkit is quite basic, but it meets my needs and doesn’t break the bank. Looking after yourself needn’t cost a fortune, some of the best beauty and skin care products are very reasonably priced. Discover what’s in my self care toolkit below and find out why each item is important. My aim with this post is to provide you with the inspiration and basic knowledge to create your own toolkit.

  1. Comfy clothes – it is impossible to relax in restricting and uncomfortable clothing. One of my favourite times of the day is when I change into my favourite pyjamas or a cosy hoodie. I know it sounds silly, but putting on a fresh pair of pyjamas after a long hot shower can make a huge difference to my mood.
  2. Scent – for me, nothing beats a warming scent, especially in my home. I always have a seasonal air freshener scent on the go and I love candles. Lighting my favourite candle takes seconds and has the power to make a room feel cosy and inviting. I usually place a candle or two on the side of the bath when I feel like taking a soak. Sometimes self care is as simple as adding an extra layer of indulgence to your me-time.
  3. Entertainment – reading a few pages of a good book or watching a ‘grown-up’ DVD rather than a Disney movie is something I need to do more. Sometimes we just need to remind ourselves of who we are again and do things that we enjoy rather than doing stuff for the kids/our colleagues/our spouses. When was the last time you read a book or watched a chick flick? If your anything like me, you’ll struggle to answer that question.
  4. Blanket – a soft and cosy blanket is probably my most used item in my self care toolkit. Barely an evening goes by where I don’t wrap myself up warm, especially during the colder months. A cosy blanket paired with a good book or DVD is my idea of a perfect night in.
  5. Lists – I have lists for pretty much everything, including what’s in my freezer and what everyone is getting for Christmas! I suffer with severe anxiety and making lists reduces my anxiety levels because I know exactly what I need to do/have done. Making lists may not seem like a typical form of self care, lists are a far cry from candles and blankets, however, doing something that reduces your stress is probably one of the best ways to look after your mind and body.
  6. Nail varnish and/or face masks – Freshly painted nails make me feel good, basic pampering boosts body confidence and nourishes both your mind and your body.
  7. My passion – as I’m sure you’ve probably guessed considering I blog for a living, my passion is writing. I find putting pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard, incredibly therapeutic. I often write down my thoughts and feelings when I am overwhelmed. Whatever your passion is, make sure you find time to indulge in it, doing what you love is incredibly important.

Without a self care toolkit, it’s easy to become burnt out and fragile. Accessing the tools within your self care toolkit is a very holistic approach to dealing with mental health.  Your self care toolkit should have the ability to soothe and rejuvenate. It’s essentially a big hug for your soul. Now that you know what’s in my self care toolkit you are armed with the knowledge to create your own.

You cannot pour from an empty cup, look after yourself.
