Back To School Organisation Tips.

The end is nigh, the summer holidays are drawing to a close. Soon the kids will be going back to school and it’s time to get organised.

Sure, we’ve loved spending lots of time with the children and we’ve created some wonderful memories this summer, but I am really looking forward to getting back into a routine! For us, organisation is key to a stress free home.

There are many simple but effective ways to bring a little structure to a school day.

  • Meal planning – I write a meal plan every week. A meal plan stops me from fretting over what to cook for dinner each night and it’s  a great way to save money. I check the meal plan in the morning and get out everything that is needed so that everything’s ready to go when we return.
  • Lunch-boxes – Usually I prepare lunch boxes in the evening for the next day, sandwiches etc are kept in the fridge and dairy products are added just before we leave in the morning. Preparing lunch boxes in the evening means I have one less job to get done whilst coordinating breakfast and getting the children into their uniform.
  • Set nights for homework and reading – create a visual calendar for your child/children that details which evenings will be spent doing homework & reading and which will be for relaxing. This helps to avoid the last-minute panic when you realise you haven’t made a 3D model of a pigeon (hypothetically speaking!).
  • Five of each – 5 skirts, 5 jumpers, 5 of everything for Monday – Friday. I put together a uniform pile for each day on a Sunday that is all washed and ironed. A tedious task, but one that saves a lot of time on school mornings.
  • The paper pile – I’m guilty of not checking the book bag as regularly as I should. Meaning I often discover letters that needed signing and returning yesterday. Checking bags every evening is something I’ve promised myself I will do this year. There is nothing worse than discovering a big pile of stuff to sign and date at 11pm at night when all I really want to do is sleep!

Each family is different and has their own systems which work for them. But I hope by sharing the little things we do, you too can achieve more calm and less crazy when September rolls around.
