I can’t say it enough, self-care is SO important, especially for mothers. We are constantly on the go, constantly doing and being everything to everyone. Even when the children are in bed, we keep carrying on until the jobs are done. We only stopping to sleep before doing it all over again.
We don’t ever switch off from being mum, but we should.
No amount of life organisation or routine will allow you to truly switch off. Taking a step back is something that we need to do for the sake of our mental health, our bodies and also, our children.
Every so often it is important to switch off from being mum and take time for ourselves to indulge in a little self-care. Life is a two-way street and, more often than not, mother’s treat life as a one-way street, constantly going in the same direction without thinking of what is coming their way.
As parents, we need to be fully prepared and ready to face the world at all times. But how can we possibly be mentally and physically prepared when we don’t step back from ‘mum duties’?
Wanting to switch off from being mum for a little while is a completely normal thing to feel. After all, we are not JUST a mother, we are a sister, a daughter, a friend, a person. I am very lucky, I have a fantastic support network. Each Saturday, I get a night away from the children. For just under 24 hours, I get to be me. I get to switch off from being mum.
I’m acutely aware that not all single mothers have this luxury, so today I want to share some of the other ways I switch off. I want to inspire you to focus on yourself whilst the children are occupied or asleep.
- Catch up on ‘grown-up’ TV – I don’t know about you but I have to record all of my favorite programmes so I don’t miss anything whilst doing dinner, baths, bedtime etc. I love being able to switch off and watch something without any interruptions.
- Early to bed, early to rise – burning the candle at both ends has never done anyone any favors! I love getting into bed early and relaxing before dozing off at a reasonable time. There is nothing worse than waking up after a late night, especially on school mornings.
- Pick up the phone and chat with a friend – I am a big talker, I don’t stop talking once I start! I speak with my best friend on the phone at the end of every day. It does wonders for our stress levels. Simply discussing our day, the good and the bad, and offloading how we are feeling does us both the world of good.
- Go for a walk – I love taking Millie out for a walk by myself. It gives me time to think and fresh air and open skies are good for the soul.
Mother’s are wired to care and nurture, it’s instinctive for us to put ourselves at the bottom of the list of priorities. That said, we can’t always give without taking. It’s so important that we have a little time to switch off, relax, gather our thoughts and recharge our batteries.
