The older the children get, the more we are enjoying playing games together. Theo loves doing puzzles and Mia will try her hand at pretty much anything.
She is a very intelligent little lady who is obsessed with reading Roald Dahl books. Her language astounds me regularly, especially when she comes out with phrases like ‘this is so humiliating’. When the opportunity arose to review a new word game, Fletter, I jumped at the chance.
Fletter is a word game for children aged 8+. Mia will be 7 next month, so she’s under the recommended age but she is so bright that I felt the game was more than suitable for her. The aim of the game is to make the words out of the spot words and earn points.
Each card has a letter and a number which tells you the number of points you are awarded if you find a word with that letter in it. To play, you must divide the cards between each player.
There are 4 rounds in each game.
- 3 letter words.
- 4 letter words.
- 5 letter words.
- 6 letter words.
Once the cards have been divided, each player must take it in turns to add a card to the playing area. The game begins once enough cards have been added to find words for that particular round.
The person with the most points at the end of the round wins.
Of course, it isn’t as simple as just finding words and gaining points. If plays spot the same word at the same time the cards are removed and neither player gets points. If players spot a different word at the same time, all players will gain the cards and points provided the letters used do not overlap.
You can also get ‘flettered’ – if you shout out a word that isn’t there (which is what I tend to do!) you will get a flettered card which will deduct two points from your score. This will also occur if you say a 4 letter word in the 3 letter round or a 5 letter word in the 6 letter round and so on…
I really enjoyed playing Fletter with Mia and she absolutely loved it when she beat me! It’s a great game to take along on days out when the children need entertaining and it would also be great fun for adults too.
Fletter is a really fun educational game, despite being quite fast paced, it requires concentration, which my children can sometimes lack!
Fletter is available for £7.99 on Amazon.
