It’s no secret that I am a huge advocate for self-care and taking time for yourself. I’m a firm believer in self-care and it’s impact on our mental and physical well-being. Unfortunately, I am guilty of putting self-care at the bottom of my priority list. In recent weeks, with COVID 19 forcing the country into lock-down, I’ve had more time to think about how vital it is to put yourself first. I’ve made a conscious effort to unwind and allow my body and mind to relax. With the children off school indefinitely, I need to be at my best both for them and myself.
Just a few weeks before we were faced with the Coronavirus pandemic I received a copy of Put Yourself First by Marianne Killick (aff). The timing couldn’t have been more fitting. Not only did I have plenty of time to fully immerse myself in the book, I also had time to put what I learned into practice. Of course making yourself a priority is vital at all times. However, when faced with stress, anxiety and fear, it is more important than ever. We are now just over two weeks into lock-down and I’ve finished this brilliant book. I’ve even begun to make changes in a bid to prioritise my well-being.
What I love most about Put Yourself First is the way it is written. It’s like listening to a friend giving you advice, it’s a reassuring and supportive hug in book form. Marianne speaks honestly, which is both refreshing and motivating. Everything within the book is thoroughly researched and communicated in a way that women engage with.
Put Yourself First made me stop and think about how much I had begun to neglect myself. It also helped me to understand myself better. Like myself, Marianne has a very busy lifestyle, so she hasn’t filled the book with endless to-do lists and unrealistic ideas for self-care. Instead, she helps you to stop and think about how you can put yourself first within the modern hectic lifestyle many of us have.
I’m so glad I received this book when I did. I’m sure I’ll refer back to it for years to come. It’s perfect for both young and old. I’d definitely like to pass it onto Mia when she is old enough to require a gentle nudge towards self-love.
