Andy Kahumbu Photography is proof that with enough passion and love for what you do, you can achieve your dreams and turn your hobby into a business. Andy Kahumbu is a Norwich family photographer based in Norfolk, England. Myself and the children first met Andy at BeWILDerwood a few months ago. Shortly after our first meeting, he got in touch to offer myself and the children a family photoshoot.
I’m very rarely in front of the camera, instead I like to be the one taking photos. A family photoshoot is something I have always wanted to do with the children, but stepping out of my comfort zone terrifies me so much that I’ve never organised it. When the opportunity arose to have a photoshoot with Norwich wedding photographer Andy I knew I had to push my insecurities aside. Before I know it, Mia will be an uncooperative teenager and Theo will be ‘too cool’ to have photographs taken with his Mum. I decided it was now or never. After all, my children won’t look back on the images from our photoshoot and see what I try and hide. They’ll just see me, their Mum, our family.
Have you ever done something that scared you, and then wondered what you were so worried about afterwards? That’s exactly what happened after our photoshoot with Andy Kahumbu. Theo was excitable and full on, but Andy took all of the cheekiness in his stride. He chatted with Theo about Toy Story and discussed Harry Potter with Mia. Seeing the two of them at ease around Andy really helped me to relax and before I knew it, Andy had begun taking photos of the three of us. We didn’t have to pose or act a certain way. We were just being us, chatting and laughing and having fun, there were no expectations.
I think that’s what makes Andy’s family photography sessions so special. As a father of two, he knows how difficult it can be to get everyone in the same place, at the same time, with smiles on faces. His family photography sessions last between 60-90 minutes which allows plenty of time for any unexpected snack or toilet breaks. Each session takes place outdoors, which means the children can burn off their extensive energy easily.
Andy has a wonderfully gentle nature, he is patient with children and simply slips into the background to take the images he wants to capture. Each and every one of my anxieties faded as soon as we settled into our photoshoot. If you know me personally you’ll know that my anxieties often consume me. It’s nothing short of a miracle that I felt comfortable enough to relax with my children in front of someone unfamiliar. If Andy can put me at ease, then he can put anyone at ease.
When my phone pinged, alerting me to an email from Andy, I could have burst with excitement. I couldn’t wait to see what he had managed to photograph. I think I got as far as image 2 before I cried tears of joy. I’m bias, I know, but my children are very photogenic. I have hundreds of photos of them looking beautiful, but these images were amazing.
Andy had captured Theo’s amazing cheeky personality and Mia’s effortless beauty in a way I never could. When I saw the images of me, I didn’t keep scrolling. I stopped, I looked, I saw the way Mia was smiling at me and the way Theo rested his head on my shoulder. Each and every image was everything I had hoped for and so much more.
